How long this actually takes
Four to five weeks for a set of workflows. Individual simple automations can be done in days. The genuine value here is speed and cost: this is the cheapest useful automation available to most businesses, and it removes real hours. Two honest constraints. Platform costs scale with task volume and can exceed a custom build at high throughput, so we model it first. And these platforms fail silently by default — a workflow that has stopped working looks identical to one with nothing to do, which is why alerting is part of the build rather than an option.

Can we not just build these ourselves?
Often, yes, and for simple connections you should — the platforms are designed for it. What tends to be missing from self-built workflows is error handling, alerting and documentation, which is why people discover a fortnight later that something stopped running.
Why does silent failure matter so much?
Because a workflow that has stopped looks exactly like one with nothing to do. Nobody notices until a customer asks why they never heard back. Alerting turns a fortnight of lost enquiries into a ten-minute fix, and it is the cheapest insurance in this service.
What do these platforms actually cost?
They price per task or operation, and cost rises faster than most people expect once volume grows. A workflow running on every website enquiry is cheap; one running on every row of a daily import is not. We model it at your volume before building.
When should we move to custom development instead?
When platform costs exceed what a custom integration would cost to build and run, when the logic outgrows what the platform can express cleanly, or when the data cannot route through a third party for compliance reasons. Below that, automation platforms win comfortably.
Is self-hosted n8n worth the effort?
At high volume or where data residency matters, yes — the cost becomes flat rather than per-task. It does require someone to run it, patch it and back it up. Below meaningful volume, a hosted platform is simpler and the saving is not worth the operational burden.
Will our team be able to change the workflows?
Yes, and that is deliberate — they are built in your account with training and documentation. The point of these platforms is that a non-developer can adjust them. An automation only its builder can maintain has recreated the problem it was meant to solve.
