Digital Marketing in Cardiff

The Welsh language question is the thing about marketing in Cardiff that a London agency reliably gets wrong, and it is not a matter of goodwill.

Cardiff sits inside a devolved policy environment with real Welsh language obligations, and both change what a website has to contain. The Nexclick works with Cardiff clients remotely and treats the language question as a legal and commercial matter rather than as a gesture.

Where we actually are

We are not based in Cardiff

The Nexclick has no Cardiff office and does not claim one. Work for Welsh clients is done remotely from Central London, with travel where a project justifies it. Cardiff has its own agency market, including firms with genuine Welsh language capability that we do not have in-house, and where a client needs bilingual content produced properly we would say so and work with a professional translator rather than pretend otherwise. That is a real limitation and it is considerably more useful stated than concealed behind a page implying a local presence and a capability that does not exist.

The local market

What is actually true of Cardiff

  • A capital city with the institutional weight that implies — government, national media and public sector all concentrated in one place.
  • A significant public and third sector economy, which brings procurement processes and funding rules into a large share of local work.
  • A compact city where local search genuinely works, unlike the sprawling conurbations further east.
  • Strong sporting and event seasonality, with major fixtures materially changing city centre demand on specific and predictable dates.
  • A media production cluster that has grown substantially and now supports a real local creative supply chain.

Sectors

What this city's economy is made of

Not a list of industries we work with — the sectors that genuinely dominate here, and how each one changes the work.

  • Public sector and government

The Senedd, Welsh Government and associated bodies concentrate here, and anything selling into them involves procurement processes, Welsh language requirements and devolved policy rather than the UK-wide assumptions most marketing carries by default.

  • Media and creative production

A substantial broadcast and production presence, including Welsh language broadcasting, supporting a local creative economy and a supply of production capability that makes video and content work practical here.

  • Financial and professional services

A growing back-office and professional services base, competing for talent and for clients with Bristol and London rather than only within Wales, which changes where their marketing budget should be aimed.

  • Higher education

Universities producing a large seasonal student population and a stream of research-linked businesses, with the term-time demand pattern that affects consumer businesses in every university city and is routinely ignored in annual planning.

  • Third sector and charities

A dense charitable and community sector operating under Welsh funding rules, frequently with bilingual obligations attached directly to grant conditions rather than adopted voluntarily.

Competition

What you are actually up against

Cardiff is a genuinely local market in a way the larger English conurbations are not. The city is compact, the population is concentrated, and local search behaves as most people assume local search behaves — somebody in Cardiff searching for a service expects a Cardiff business and will generally find one. That makes map pack position and local citation work more directly effective here than in Greater Manchester or London, where the same effort fragments across boroughs and produces less. Competition for local terms is moderate, and the practical implication is that fundamentals done properly still go a long way: a well-configured Google Business Profile, genuine reviews and real local content move position here in a way that has become difficult in denser markets. The exception is anything selling into the public sector, where search visibility matters far less than being on the right procurement framework at the right moment.

Regional differences

What changes here, legally and administratively

Real, and more than most agencies expect. The Welsh Language Standards place duties on public bodies and on organisations delivering public services in Wales to provide Welsh language services, which for a website means genuinely bilingual content rather than a translated homepage — and machine translation is both visibly poor and, in a regulated context, inadequate. Organisations bidding for Welsh public sector work frequently find bilingual capability is a contract requirement rather than a preference. Beyond language, health, education, housing and much economic policy are devolved to the Welsh Government, so funding eligibility, delivery bodies and public programmes differ from England — a claim about eligibility that is true in Bristol may be false in Cardiff. Charity regulation remains with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, unlike Scotland, which is a distinction people frequently get backwards. Law is England and Wales, so legal services operate as they do in England.

Checklist

The Welsh language questions to answer before building anything

Bilingual delivery is a legal duty for some organisations, a contract requirement for others and a commercial choice for everyone else. These decide which you are, and they should be answered before a site is designed rather than after it is built.

  1. 01Are you a public body, or do you deliver services on behalf of one?
  2. 02Do any of your contracts or grant conditions require Welsh language provision?
  3. 03Are you likely to bid for Welsh public sector work in the next two years?
  4. 04Do your customers include people who would prefer to deal with you in Welsh?
  5. 05If you offer Welsh, can you also answer the phone and reply to email in Welsh?
  6. 06Is the Welsh content genuine professional translation, or machine output?
  7. 07Would a Welsh speaker find the translation embarrassing rather than adequate?
  8. 08Is hreflang configured, so the right version is served and indexed correctly?
  9. 09Does the Welsh version have its own URLs rather than sitting behind a switcher?
  10. 10Will both versions be maintained, or will the Welsh one quietly go stale?
  11. 11Is your business or trading name used correctly in Welsh?
  12. 12Have you budgeted for translating future changes, not only the initial build?
  13. 13If you cannot sustain it bilingually, is a partial commitment worse than none?

What applies here

The services that matter most in Cardiff

Each links to the full service page. The reason underneath is specific to this city rather than a description of the service.

  • SEO

    Multilingual SEO

Bilingual delivery in Wales is a legal duty for some organisations and a contract requirement for others, and doing it properly means genuine Welsh content on its own URLs with correct hreflang rather than a translated page behind a switcher.

  • Local SEO

    Google Business Profile Optimisation

Cardiff is compact enough that map pack position translates fairly directly into enquiries, which is much less true in the larger and more fragmented conurbations across the border.

  • Digital Marketing

    B2B Lead Generation

Selling into the public sector here means procurement, frameworks and bilingual capability rather than lead generation in the ordinary commercial sense.

  • Local SEO

    Local Citation Building

Welsh directories and local sources carry weight that UK-wide citation lists miss entirely, and they are a genuine local advantage available to any business willing to use them.

  • Digital Marketing

    Content Marketing

Devolved policy means Welsh-specific guidance is frequently unavailable anywhere else, which is an unusually open content opportunity for anybody prepared to produce it accurately.

Questions

Cardiff questions

Do we legally need a Welsh language website?

If you are a public body or deliver services on behalf of one, the Welsh Language Standards may place duties on you directly. If you bid for Welsh public sector contracts, bilingual capability is frequently a requirement in the tender. For most private businesses it is a commercial choice rather than a legal duty.

Is machine translation acceptable for Welsh content?

No, in both senses. Where duties apply it will not satisfy them, and where they do not it is visibly poor to any Welsh speaker and does more reputational harm than having no Welsh version at all. Budget for professional translation or do not offer Welsh.

Do you have Welsh language capability in-house?

No. Where a client needs bilingual content we work with professional translators and say so up front. If Welsh delivery is central to your organisation, a Cardiff agency with that capability in-house is a legitimate and probably better choice, and we would tell you that early.

Does devolution actually affect our marketing claims?

It can, quite directly. Health, education, housing and much economic policy are devolved, so funding eligibility and public programmes differ from England. A statement about a scheme that is accurate in Bristol may be simply wrong in Cardiff, and that is a misleading claim rather than a nuance.

Is local search more effective in Cardiff than in bigger cities?

Noticeably. The city is compact and the population concentrated, so map pack position converts more directly into enquiries than in fragmented conurbations. It also means the fundamentals still move things here — profile, reviews and genuine local content — which has become hard elsewhere.

Are Welsh charities regulated differently?

No, and this one gets confused with Scotland constantly. Charities in Wales are regulated by the Charity Commission for England and Wales. What does differ is Welsh Government funding, delivery bodies and, frequently, bilingual conditions attached to grants.

How do we sell to the Welsh public sector?

Through procurement rather than marketing. Frameworks, tender processes and bilingual capability decide it, and visibility in search plays almost no part. The useful preparation is having the documentation and the Welsh language position ready before a tender appears, not after.
