Google Maps Ranking
The three map pack results take most local clicks. Everything below them competes for what is left.
Google Maps ranking is decided by proximity, prominence and relevance. Proximity cannot be changed; the other two can. The Nexclick works those signals through the profile, reviews, citations and local content, and measures position from a grid of points rather than from one browser.
Is this you?
What usually prompts the call
- You rank well when you search from the office and vanish two miles away.
- You are in the map pack for your brand name and nowhere for the service itself.
- A competitor further from the searcher consistently outranks you, which means it is not proximity.
- You have no idea whether you rank across your area because you only ever check from one place.
What we do
The actual deliverables
Things that appear on an invoice, not adjectives.
- Geo-grid baseline measurement
- Rankings measured from a grid of points across your target area before any work starts. Checking from your own browser gives a flattering and useless picture, because Google personalises by location.
- Relevance work on the profile
- Categories, services, products and description aligned to what people actually search. Relevance is the signal you have most direct control over and the one most commonly left at its setup defaults.
- Prominence building
- Reviews, citations, local links and brand mentions. Prominence is how well known Google thinks you are locally, and it is built slowly rather than switched on.
- Behavioural signal improvement
- Photos, posts and complete information so people click, call and request directions from the listing. Engagement with a profile appears to feed back into how often it is shown.
- Competitor gap analysis
- The three businesses currently in the pack, compared field by field against you. This is a specific list of differences, not a general benchmark.
- Local landing page support
- The website page the profile points at, built with genuine local substance. Profile and site reinforce each other; a profile pointing at a thin page underperforms.
- Monthly geo-grid reporting
- The same grid re-run each month, so you see your effective radius expanding or contracting rather than a single average position figure that hides the shape.
Decision tree
Why are you not in the map pack? A diagnostic
Work down in order and stop at the first match. These are ordered by how frequently each turns out to be the actual cause, based on the profiles we audit.
01You rank from your own premises but not two miles away
Normal. Proximity is working as designed. The fix is prominence — reviews, citations, local links — which expands your radius rather than overriding distance.
02Your primary category differs from those of the businesses currently ranking
Most likely cause, and the fastest fix. Match the primary category the pack uses, then add secondaries. Movement often follows within days.
03You have noticeably fewer reviews than everyone in the pack
Prominence gap. Build a systematic review request process — this is a three-to-six-month fix rather than a quick one, and it compounds.
04Competitors have keywords stuffed into their business names
It works and it breaches Google guidelines. Do not copy it. Report them through the Business Profile redressal form — this is legitimate and frequently effective.
05Your profile is missing services, products, photos or attributes
Relevance gap. Complete every field. A half-filled profile competes against fully-filled ones on the signals Google can actually read.
06Your NAP differs between profile, website and directories
Inconsistency actively suppresses local rankings. Audit and correct citations before doing anything else — building on an inconsistent foundation wastes the spend.
07You have no premises in the area at all, only a service radius
Service area businesses are ranked from a centroid you cannot move. You can rank across a radius, but not in a city where you have no presence. Adjust expectations rather than budget.
08Everything above is fine and you still are not showing
Check for a suspension or a duplicate listing suppressing the main one. Both are invisible from the front end and both are common.
How it works
Step by step, with timeframes
Timeframes are typical rather than guaranteed, and they assume we get account access and approvals when we ask.
- 01Week 1
Measure from a grid
Baseline across your target area, plus competitor comparison. This establishes your real radius, which is usually smaller than expected.
- 02Week 2–4
Fix relevance
Categories, services and profile completeness. This is the fastest-moving lever and occasionally shifts position within days.
- 03Month 2–6
Build prominence
Reviews, citations and local links, consistently. This is the slow compounding part and it is where most self-managed profiles stop.
- 04Monthly
Re-measure and adjust
The same grid, so you can see the radius change. Where a direction has stopped producing movement, we say so and change it.

Timeline
How long this actually takes
Relevance changes can move positions within days to three weeks. Prominence takes three to six months because reviews and citations accumulate rather than arrive. Proximity never changes: if your premises are five miles from a city centre, you will not rank in the centre regardless of spend, and any agency that does not tell you that before taking the work is selling you something undeliverable. What is realistic is expanding your radius outward from where you already appear, and the geo-grid is how you see that happening.
Pricing model
Monthly retainer
Monthly retainer covering profile work, prominence building and geo-grid reporting. A one-off baseline audit can be taken separately if you want the picture before committing.
Questions
Google Maps Ranking questions
Why do I see myself ranking but customers do not?
Because Google personalises local results by the searcher’s location, and by your own search and browsing history. Checking from your office, logged into the account that manages the profile, gives the most flattering possible result. Geo-grid tracking exists precisely to remove that bias.
Can we rank in a city we do not have premises in?
Not in the map pack, no. Local pack results require a verified location or a service area anchored to a real address. You can rank organically in the blue links beneath the pack for that city, and that is a different job — a location page rather than a profile.
Does a virtual office or coworking address work?
No, and it is a common route to a suspension. Google requires staff present during stated hours and permanent signage at the address. Mailbox and virtual office listings are actively enforced against, particularly in competitive service sectors.
How much does proximity really matter?
A great deal, and more in dense urban areas than rural ones. In a city centre with fifty competitors within a mile, proximity dominates and your radius will be small. In a rural area with three competitors in twenty miles, prominence matters far more and your radius can be large.
Do map pack rankings and organic rankings affect each other?
They influence one another indirectly. A strong, relevant website supports local prominence, and a well-optimised profile can lift the associated page. They are separate result sets with separate signals, and working only one of them leaves value on the table.
What is the fastest legitimate way to improve position?
Correcting the primary category, if it is wrong. It is the strongest relevance signal, it takes minutes, and it is suboptimal on a large share of the profiles we audit. Nothing else moves as fast for as little effort — after that, everything is a matter of months.
