Marketing for Plumbers & Heating Engineers
Emergency work pays today and installations pay properly. Almost every plumbing marketing budget is quietly optimised for the first while the owner wants the second.
Plumbing businesses run two trades at once: emergency call-outs decided in minutes, and boiler or bathroom installations researched over weeks. The Nexclick separates them, because a campaign optimised for emergency work will bring call-outs when what the business needed was installations.
Is this you?
What actually goes wrong in this sector
- Your phone rings with emergencies while you are trying to grow the installation side.
- Leads arrive while you are under a sink and go unanswered.
- You are paying a lead-generation site for enquiries sold to three other firms at the same moment.
- Your Google Business Profile ranks well in one postcode and nowhere else you cover.
- Gas Safe registration is your strongest credential and it appears nowhere prominent.
How buyers choose
The decision you are actually competing in
Every recommendation further down this page follows from this. If it does not describe your customers, the recommendations will not fit either — tell us and we will say so.
Emergency work is chosen in under two minutes, almost always on a phone, from the map pack or a Local Services listing. Nobody reads a website while water is coming through a ceiling — they call the first credible result that answers. Reviews are scanned rather than read, and proximity matters enormously. Installation work is the opposite: somebody who has decided their boiler needs replacing gets three quotes over two or three weeks, compares warranty terms and finance options, checks the Gas Safe register and reads reviews properly. The firms that win installations are usually the ones that turn up when they said they would and send a clear written quote — an operational advantage marketing can advertise but cannot manufacture.
What applies here
The services that genuinely matter in this sector
Each links to the full service page. The reason underneath is specific to this sector — it is why the service matters here, not a description of what it is.
Local SEO
Google Maps Ranking
Emergency plumbing is a map pack business. Position in the local pack for the postcodes you genuinely cover decides how much emergency work you see, and proximity means one profile cannot serve a wide area evenly however good it is.
Paid Advertising
Local Services Ads
Google Guaranteed sits above everything else for exactly the searches emergency plumbing depends on, and charges per lead rather than per click. The real work is disputing wrong numbers and out-of-area leads, which most firms never do at all.
Local SEO
Service Area Business SEO
You travel to the customer and have no shopfront, which changes how the profile is configured and how coverage across several towns has to be built rather than simply claimed.
Local SEO
Review Generation & Management
Reviews are scanned in seconds during an emergency and read properly before an installation. A request process the engineers can run from the van, at the moment the job finishes, is worth more than any campaign.
Paid Advertising
Google Ads for Lead Generation
For installation work specifically, where the search is researched and the job value justifies the click. Emergency terms are usually better served by Local Services Ads at a lower cost per won job.
AI Services
AI Receptionist
The biggest leak in this trade is the unanswered call while somebody is under a sink. Taking details, separating emergency from installation and booking a callback recovers work that currently goes to whoever picked up.
What to skip
What is not worth your money in this sector
The section a sector page normally leaves out. Several of these are things we could have sold you.
Buying shared leads from lead-generation platforms
The same enquiry is sold to three or four firms within minutes, so you are competing on speed rather than suitability and racing downwards on price. The cost looks low per lead and is high per won job.
A large content programme
Nobody with a burst pipe reads a blog. There is a narrow case for installation-side content — boiler comparisons, running costs, grant eligibility — and almost none for anything beyond it.
Social media as a primary channel
Useful for showing finished work and building local credibility. It is not where emergency demand lives, and a firm posting three times a week while its Google profile sits half-configured has the priorities exactly inverted.
Listing service areas you cannot actually reach
Twenty towns you rarely travel to produces enquiries you decline, damages your reviews when you accept them and arrive late, and dilutes the local relevance that was already working.
Decision tree
Where your next pound should actually go
Plumbing budgets get spread evenly across channels doing completely different jobs. Work down until one matches your actual constraint — the answer is very rarely "more of everything".
01You want more emergency call-outs
Local Services Ads and map pack position, in that order. Nothing else reaches somebody standing in water, and a website redesign will not help you at all.
02You want more boiler or bathroom installations
Search ads and quote pages, started six to eight weeks before the season. Installation buyers research, which means there is something to persuade.
03Your phone goes unanswered during jobs
Fix that before any media spend. Every channel here delivers phone calls, and an unanswered call is a lead you bought and then threw away.
04You are buying shared leads from a directory
Stop, and move that budget to Local Services Ads. You will pay more per lead and considerably less per won job, because the lead belongs only to you.
05You cover several towns and only rank in one
This is a profile and location content problem rather than a budget problem. More spend will not extend map pack reach beyond proximity, whatever anyone tells you.
06Your review count is below your competitors
Fix that before increasing spend. Reviews are the filter applied to every result in the pack, so you are currently paying for visibility that gets skipped over.
07You are already at capacity
Do not buy more leads. Raise prices, or shift the mix towards installations. Marketing cannot fix a diary that is already full, and more enquiries will only mean more declined.
08A national firm has moved into your area
Compete on proximity, response time and reviews. Those are the three things a national operator cannot replicate locally, and none of them requires outspending anybody.
Compliance
The rules that shape the marketing
Lighter than the regulated professions, but not absent. Gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and advertising gas work without registration is an offence — displaying the registration number and the specific categories you hold is a legal position and a strong trust signal simultaneously. Unvented hot water and certain heating work carry their own competency requirements. Where you offer finance on an installation, consumer credit rules apply and an FCA permission or a broker arrangement is required, which catches firms advertising "spread the cost" without one. Boiler grant and scheme eligibility claims must be accurate and current, because schemes change and an out-of-date claim on a landing page is a misleading advertisement. Work sold in a customer’s home also carries cancellation rights that must be stated.
Buying cycle
How long this sector actually takes
Emergency work has no cycle worth the name — the search, the call and the job happen inside an hour, so visibility at that moment is the entire game and nothing compensates for being absent. Installation work runs two to four weeks from first search to booked job, usually with three quotes involved, and it is seasonal in a way that catches firms out. Boiler demand spikes with the first cold snap and again at the first failure of the winter, while bathroom and heating upgrade work clusters in spring. Building installation campaigns in October is late; the firms that do well have been visible since August.
First 90 days
What the first quarter realistically looks like
Ordered by what has to be true before the next thing works, not by what is quickest to show you.
- 01Week 1–2
Split emergency from installation
Separate tracking, separate campaigns and separate phone routing, because the two need opposite things and averaging them serves neither of them.
- 02Week 1–4
Fix the profile and the coverage
Google Business Profile configured properly as a service area business, covering the postcodes you genuinely serve, with Gas Safe credentials prominent rather than buried.
- 03Week 2–6
Get the calls answered
By an answering service, a receptionist or an AI agent — whichever fits. The unanswered call is the largest single loss in this trade and it costs nothing in media to fix.
- 04Week 4–12
Build installation demand ahead of the season
Search campaigns and quote pages for installation work, launched before the weather turns rather than in response to it once every competitor is bidding.
Questions
Plumbers & Heating Engineers questions
Should we run Local Services Ads or standard Google Ads?
Local Services for emergency work — it sits above everything, charges per lead and reaches people who will not scroll. Standard search for installations, where there is a researched decision to influence and landing pages can do real work. Most firms should run both, for different jobs.
How do we get more installation work instead of call-outs?
Stop letting one campaign serve both. Emergency terms and installation terms need separate campaigns, separate budgets and separate landing pages, or the cheaper and more frequent emergency searches will absorb the budget. Then start the installation campaigns before the season, not during it.
Are shared leads from plumbing directories worth buying?
Rarely. The lead goes to several firms simultaneously, so you win by calling fastest rather than by being the best fit, and the customer is already comparing on price by the time you speak. The same budget in Local Services Ads produces leads that are yours alone.
How do we rank in more than one town?
Map pack visibility is driven by proximity, so a single profile cannot cover a wide area evenly however well optimised. Genuine location pages with real local content help, a second physical location helps more, and paid coverage fills the gap. Anyone promising map pack dominance across a county is describing something that does not exist.
Do we need to display our Gas Safe number?
You must be registered to carry out gas work and advertising it without registration is an offence. Displaying the number is also one of the strongest trust signals available to you, and homeowners increasingly check the register directly. Put it in the header, not the footer.
When should we start advertising boiler installations?
August, for a winter that starts in October. Demand builds with the first cold weather and the auction gets more expensive as every competitor arrives at once. Being visible before the spike means cheaper clicks and a pipeline of quotes already issued when the phones start.
What happens to our leads if we cannot answer the phone during jobs?
You pay for them and lose them. Every channel in this trade delivers phone calls, and an emergency caller moves to the next result in seconds. An answering service or an AI agent that takes details and books a callback recovers a meaningful share of work you are currently buying and discarding.
